New items for my workshop :D got a big variac
« on: September 04, 2020, 12:17:01 AM »
Okay so I was looking on Facebook marketplace to see if anyone was selling some RF generators because I wanted to do some plasma experiments like is seen in this video

Now I found a post saying a heap of electronics needed a home and that someone could pick it up for a small price. Now turns out this guy who owned the stuff died recently and he was a major league engineer for philips. (It was in Eindhoven in the Netherlands where the Philips innovation center is located at). Now I could take anything I wanted from that house so I took a ton of weird stuff with me. No idea what most of this is other then the variac and the signal generator lol. Maybe yall can enlighten me on this.

Here's the variac with a DC thing going on that goes up to 20 volts

This is the RF generator. would this be sufficient to do the plasma cleaning as seen in the video?

Here's the rest

So does anyone spot something usefull here or did I drive 180 kilometers for a heap of junk? Well the variac is worth it I love the old design and the dials and stuff

Most of it seems to be home built, propably for a very specific task.
However it also seems to be built very vell and I bet that you can reuse or modify a lot of the items to be very useful.

The big box with the bunch of connectors on the last picture might be some sort of computer or terminal, since it has some parallel IO and bus connections.
It might be interesting to get running, I guess.

Other than that I think you got a great assortment of all kind of electronic and mechanical components, that deserve to be reused.
(And I personally really like seeing what somebody else might have thought when he built these units)

I'll try to get some pictures of the home build devices internals if you're intrested. seems there are a lot of old expensive modules in some of them

It is always exciting to empty a old lab of equipment, and there is always a chance of being lucky on the finds :)

- The signal generator modulation meter is properly not useful anymore, unless you work with modulating those specific frequencies. Perhaps could be interring to use it to drive some coils wound around your plasma chamber to affect the discharges...

- Silver front with geared knob seems like a home built RF amplifier/receiver

- Black matte with cream colour front and the two large knobs... not quite sure what that is, but seems like some kind of amplifier and the tuning "magic eye" in the middle suggest its something with hitting frequencies.

- silver frame with black front and the MHz meter, seems like a home built RF receiver

- the home built computer, looks very interesting! Just from the hint of the "1861 port A", it could be a Super Elf? https://www.vintagevibe.co.nz/single-board-computers/super-elf/

- The large AC voltmeter seems like it can go down to be a nice millivolt meter, if its still working properly.

Here are a lot more pics and the internals of that computer (seems to be like 100% homemade) for who's intrested.

I would like to see the front of the homemade computer, single photos of each board back/front and also the boards underneath the EEPROM board.

Seems like a real rare gem, would be cool to see it run :)

Due to my uni class picking up pace again I think I won't have time to research enough to get it up and running. I can get some nice pics of the boards though as I am intrested as well.

The thing is able to go from 1 up to 30 MHZ I think. There are supposedly 9 vacuum tubes inside each working with a different frequency range. https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/measurem_standard_signal_generato_2.html
http://bee.mif.pg.gda.pl/ciasteczkowypotwor/Boonton/Boonton_Model_80_Manual.pdf

I just don't know if the output wattage would be good enough for plasma generation and I'd need a proper tuner

The computer unit and the unit with the RF modules are definately a piece of art.
I guess if nothing else they deserve to get a place in some shelve.
These kind of things make great projects for cold winter weekends, when you are out of own ideas.  :)
