Keep or throw away ?
« on: January 24, 2019, 11:21:11 AM »
Hello,
These components have been hanging around my workshop for a while.
They look like something that could be used for a cool project but some of them are complete mistery.
Image 1 - I thought these are large IGBT's but they are definitely not.
Images 2 and 3 - Large capacitor bank of unknown rating
Image 4 - another large cap

Please let me know if any of these are worth keeping

Yes, I know that the mouse can be used as a pointing device, it is there fir scale  ;D

Agree that the semiconductors are only good for scrap - look to be BJTs rather than IGBTs.

As for the capacitors, the last one is worth keeping, the bank might be but is difficult without knowing the rating. If you can measure the physical size of the mystery caps and their capacitance then you may be able to get a ballpark voltage rating though (through comparison with other capacitors of the same size and capacitance), and potentially confirm it by charging them up to the estimated voltage through a current limited supply - if the leakage remains low then they are probably useable at that voltage.

I agree with Hydron on this one.

The power transistors are only good for a paper weight, tech display or selling the copper base for scrap money. I attached a datasheet for the series of Fuji switches.  Even if it was IGBTs they would have a horrible slow switching speeds, low peak current specifications etc etc.

You should search for "capacitor reforming" to get a guide on how to revive old electrolytic capacitors and get an idea of their performance. The last one looks newer than the other, so I would assume that is still in the good end, but could properly need reforming aswell.

Thanks for the info, next up, we have some legless components

3 x G40N60UFD Ultra Fast IGBT
2 x F30U60DN Ultra Fast Recovery Rectifiers

Are these any good for SSTC ? With this much speed I’ll be surprised if they aren’t !!
They test OK, and yes I know they should live in an anti static bag  ;D, which they do.

There are people that have successfully built SSTC with IGBTs, but IGBTs are really better suited for a DRSSTC.

So your little silicon stash here is perfect for a small half-bridge coil.

Excellent ! Thanks for the info.
DRSSTC is a bit too complex for me right now, i need to get my simple SSTC working first, then hopefully I can move onto something more challenging.

I don't think that the Fuji devices are junk however they are old are going to be slow but you could use them on a ferrite core zvs. maybe a big drsstc or induction heater or coil poper. 6DI120A-060 here is the PDF for the 6DI100A-060

https://datasheet.octopart.com/6DI120A-060-Fuji-datasheet-10733550.pdf

the other old bricks fuji 2di1502-100 are 1000v 150A half bridges. if you know what the voltage rating of the  caps are they would be more useful. there age might affect there performance but if they hold a charge then what the hell at least you have something to mess around with of you don't have a lot of money or find it hard to find parts. I have seen pictures of jalopies that looked like they should not work made from spare parts

Those 2DI150A bricks are BJT power transistors, not a IGBT, and are not suitable for anything in a 2019 application, its a paper weight, copper base scrap money or experiment with building a class A audio amplifier :)

I still say that if you want for a giant flyback or induction heater they will switch a lot of power of you know what you are doing. they may not be sutible for a DRSSTC because they are slow and old Technology but if you want something to mess around by all means. Do you have a special project in mind and what kind of resources do you have?

Most likely not even usable for an amplifier - they will not have very good SOA for linear operation. I vote for scrap - that's what I did with my pile of large power BJTs.

These came out of a very old CNC machines which were sold for scrap from the company I work for.
Capacitor bank came out of EDM - Electric Discharge ( Machining ) Machine, Wire Cutter to be exact.
As far as mechanical engineering resources are concerned, I have access to everything from a hand drill to a Water Jet machine that can cut 100mm steel plate.

With electronics, I have a small bench in my garage with some basic equipment ( scope, FG, soldering station, multimeter, etc. )
As far as expertise in electronics is concerned, it is a case of a lot of desire, but limited understanding. I understand a lot more than an average person, but there is a lot of empty spaces in between.

you have lots of expierience if you want t learn there is this thread on the other page witch I might try.

https://highvoltageforum.net/index.php?topic=433.0

If you hook up a gate driver circuit and use a resistive load and a stiff 40v power source you might see how well they work. my fealing is what do you have to loose they were free. If you had a nice peace to build like a 3ft DRSSTC I would sugest getteing more modern parts

TDK-Lambda HWS1500-48 Power Supply
48V, 32A, 1500W
Brand new cost $1970 AUD

Rescued two from a dumpster, both worked ok, then one just stopped. I have no schematic or experience to repair it.
I managed to narrow down the fault to one of three boards, but I am not comfortable poking around the PSU while powered up.
Board that you can see on top is faulty. When replaced with the board from the other unit, everything works fine.

Maybe I should scavange the parts and put it back into the bin ?

Could those bricks be used as rectifiers? You could rectify a transformer to make a good welder. Of course you probably already have one. :-\

Hi AndreiRS,

I suppose they could be used for a welder, but welders are so cheap these days it is not worth the trouble. Only thing you’d get out of it is “I made it myself” feeling.
