Using PVC insulated wire instead of enamel
« on: December 10, 2021, 02:54:33 PM »
How about using PVC insulated wire in diy ferrite core transformer ? (Cu 0.5mm^2, with insulation d = 2.1mm)
Using zero insulation between layers,  when done put in transformer oil + vacuum (aspirator vacuum pump) to remove air.

Using zero insulation between layers,  when done put in transformer oil + vacuum (aspirator vacuum pump) to remove air.

Insulation thickness leaves much less room for turn in the transformer core window available.

PVC insulation is rated for a lower temperature than enameled wire, so melting insulation in the middle of the winding is a real problem

I have done low voltage transformer re-windings of MOTs with PVC wire, the voltage was limited by how many turns I could fit in, but I have not yet melted it, as I do not overload it :)

It it is for an off line transformer, you need extra insulation or triple insulated wire or what requirements a suitable standard sets.

PVC is fine for "home standard", but I would use something with a bit more resistance. Rewinding a MOT where you have a split bobin you could basically use anything with large enough. I have added secondary turns on ordinary toroids, just because that was what I had at hand, was poor and did care that it looked like s-t. Worked fine.

However , single layer insulated wire is probably not suitable for off.line and/or high voltages.

PVC and mineral oil is not a good combo.

PVC has lower temperature resistance, and the insulation will lead to higher temperature in the inner layers.

Also, you might want to have a better coupling and adding thick insulation means a more spacious winding reducing coupling, and increasing leakage inducatnce. Which might or might not be a good thing depending on topology.

I have toyed with the idea about using large cores, and triple insulated wiring in off line power supplies , but two layer enamlled wiring with 500Vrms would probably be sufficient as the voltage per turn is below wiring stand off voltage.

Which basically makes PVC wire unnecessary.
A man can not have too many variacs
