Beginner DRSSTC Help Pls
« on: November 04, 2021, 07:05:42 AM »
Hello there guys
So I want some help regarding my first DRSSTC... I am going to design it around Loneoceans Labs DRSSTC 2. So since this is my first time building a solid state coil(i have built a sgtc before), I would like some help. I want to build an almost exact clone of his build, or if its not possible, I would also add Steve Ward's DRSSTC 1 designs to it and make my own design.
Any help is apreciated.
Binuk

PS: I am only 13 so pls don't invade me with super advanced calculations and stuff ;D

Hi there!

I don't know exactly where to start. So maybe from simple: don't do it!

Don't get me wrong, DRSSTC being the first solid state tesla is a bad idea. I am experienced in classic tesla coils. I built a few of them, from simple ones based on ZVS to quite large and complicated DCSGTC (direct current spark gap tesla coil).

And believe me, DRSSTC is something completely different.

I started with SSTC for educational purposes even though I knew from the beginning that I wanted to create DRSSTC. It was a good choice. These are simpler, cheaper and slightly safer (depending on the design) constructions. You have to learn how to use an oscilloscope, gain experience in electronics and integrated circuits.

Even SSTC will be quite challenging and frustrating for you to start with.

There is a fundamental problem with solid state tesla coils: even if you make an exact copy of someone else's SSTC or worse,  DRSSTC, it's almost sure that your tesla won't work right away.

You will make mistakes, come across a faulty component or use a replacements, and you will have to be able to find the cause and fix it without hurting yourself and parts of your coil. For this you need knowledge, perfect knowledge of how the driver and the whole system works + good hardware - an oscilloscope is necessary and knowledge of how to properly handle it!

SSTCs are also dangerous when powered from the mains, but DRSSTCs are much more dangerous, complicated and more difficult to design and manufacture. In the primary circuit there are higher voltages, huge currents and very high energies stored in the capacitors.

Exploding transistors are not uncommon phenomenon, even for experienced coilers   ;)

At the beginning build an SSTC from scratch, preferably 12V or 24V powered.

P.S. "super advanced calculations and stuff" is a must  :D

Start with a kit that you know works, then play around with it, modify it, blow stuff up. I started with a oneTesla and learned a lot before making my next one from the ground up. I got right into DRSSTCs, it is certainly a neat way of getting into electronics as it incorporates many aspects; low voltage, high voltage, programming, E&M.

Best of luck!

Thanks all for your replies!
I just remembered, I had experience building an SSTC, though not mine. A few years back, me and my friend stated working on a tesla coil for the science fair at our school. We ended up building an SSTC because SGTCs were loud, noisy and unable to play music. Even though not the best design, we ended up getting second place, mostly because the music played impressed the judges.
We used a half-bridge of 50N60 IGBTs and a secondary coil of 12"x3.5". It had a resonant frequency of around 170khz.
So, just give me a comprehensive beginner guide so I can get going!

I can outline what worked for me.

Picking a design from loneoceans site can get you into the right ballpark. You can modify it as much as you are comfortable. His documentation is very good.

The Kaiser Power Electronics site has the best DRSSTC general design information.

https://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/drsstc-design-guide/

In addition searching this site (or 4HV) will get you ideas for other designs, some quite detailed.

I'd also agree with Maju about DRSSTC. I had build a half dozen SSTCs, a SGTC and two QCW and still the weirdness of my first DRSSTC surprised me. They are touchy beasts to tune and major radiators of EMI.

Cheers.

Thanks alan for your reply! So you mean that I can just copy his design and parts and somehow make it work?? I have a design idea based on Loneoceans DRSSTC 2 and my own secondary coil from Kaizer Power Electronics medium secondary 1(attached below). Will it work?? I am limited to 20A 240V max power which is 4.8kw. Will this be enough?? Or shall I have to install a new 30A breaker(which I do not want to do)?
Thanks again!

As far as detailed design information I can't help you. I'm not that good at this stuff.

It is unclear to me why you want to mix together two different "designs". Personally I'd go with loneoceans design.
The Kaiser site gives lots of good information to allow you to check changes that you might want to make.

As far as seeing if the loneoceans design works with the Kaiser secondary you need to run JavaTC and see what it tells you.

And power handling, if you read the DRSSTC-2 page carefully you can answer your own question. Loneoceans does a good job
documenting his designs.

A final comment is that the site is pretty much set-up to answer question not supply a blow by blow description on how to build a  coil. If you ask specific question rather than "How do I build a DRSSTC" you will get better results. The people on the site want to help, not do all the work for the builder.

Cheers.

Hi Binuk

Its cool to see that you want to take on this challenge at only 13 years. I would start by advising you on getting help from someone with electrical education or experience, you can get hurt and possible die. Due to your young age, you do lack the proper safety education and knowledge about high frequency high voltage.

You need access to a oscilloscope, to troubleshoot on a DRSSTC driver, just trying out random stuff will only leave you with something that does not work, explodes your IGBTs or burn slowly to the ground.

Stay with one design and copy it. Loneoceans did do a better job documenting his coils than I did, so there is more details, I tried to just add enough pictures :) But for your first coil, do not start mixing designs and inventing your own, the learning curve is steep enough to just build a copy.

The medium sized secondary you circled out from my guide, 4.8kW is plenty of available power for that. My DRSSTC 1 can make 1.5 meter sparks from 2300W input.

Thanks Mads for your reply!

High voltage experience, I got one. The friend I mentioned earlier, his dad works at a high voltage power distro place. He knows about safety and has experience with HV power distro lines :)
Regarding the oscilloscope, I have access to a Keysight InfiniiVision MSOX3054T.
I'll stay with the Loneoceans design and build it. I plan on starting in December when school tests are over.
If I have any further clarifications, I'll put a post here.
Thanks Again!
