Cheapest fiber optic option for pwm control

Hello I am currently a new user here. I Am wondering about fiber optics and the process of purchasing parts out there for them or a guide for them. I am assuming it works similar to wires just with an optocoupler on the receiver.

 If fiber optics turns out to be too expensive at the moment I will attempt an Ir remote with a frequency blocking feature on the ir remote because that sounds pretty easy and cheap to implement for a temporary solution with the ir sensors I have laying around spare microcontrollers and potentiometers.

That is not the best idea. The long wires will act as antennas and will pick up interference which will mess with the on times.

If you want a super cheap fiberoptic transmitter and receiver look for toslink. They are cheap and can be found anywhere. also salvaged. The fiberoptic cable is cheap too

I was phasing the way the fiber optics would work like with simple Boolean logic to control a phototransistor on the side of the receiver. simple stuff really. I'm imagining

your saying all those old tv players with the fiber optic input I see at the thrift store can be scrapped easily and cheaper than fiber optics on the internet? interesting. toslink receivers and transmitters seem to be a 30$ investment on mouser which I can spend but I scrap a lot of e-waste. So that may be the better option if I'm reading you correctly.
