So, i hava made a tesla coil that is with this specs:

NST 6KV 100ma out - 50hz 230V in.
primary coil 7 cm from center to first spire with 1.5mm copper hard whire.
secondary is a 8cm pvc tube for 40cm of height so 1:5 rateo with around 2000 turns of 0.2mm copper wire.
the spark gap is a ropary spark gap that can go up to 3000 rpm with 1.5cm electrodes and spaced 6cm apart.
the mmc is a 0.094uF mmc
the topload is 33cm outer diameter with 4cm tube diameter

Im getting oky sparks out of the little one... even tho they are no max yet... theorical max is 107cm.. the one i have now is produceing around 67 but i know for a fact that i can go up to 80-90 cus i had the same config in a different bigger coil and was produceing nicer resoults... the coil is around 70cm tall overall.. and i want the sparks to touch ground (is my dream and the reason i did a lower and smaller coil to be more efficent)

the problems are that my primary gets really hot (around 60 degrees celsious i think) after just a bit of use with the nst being hot too (30 secs of continuative use)

also the secondary is not coated and i had really lots of flashovers but i dont get why since the big one didnt do any... it was not touching the primary or comeing back from the topload.. it was just jumping all over.. i also had screws holding the secondary coil base that jumped to heart.. so i guess i need to glue or make a 3d printed stand or something for that.. maybe even plastic screws or wooden stuff will resolve this...

another problem is the spark lengt... i got around 67cm of sparks.. wich is oky for the little one.. looked impressive compared to size... but not really nice since i want it to touch ground and i know for a fact that it can do it can do 80-90 easly with the other big one i made (wich also had the primary really hot but being a tv coaxial cable used both internal and esternal i tought it was the aluminum the problem but seems to not be that) so i would like to increase the spark lenght...

lastly.. i think the spark gap is not really working good... maybe there is too much capacitance or too little electrodes number.. i could try to increase to 4 electrodes and see if it helps...
but i saw the coil really struggleing to fire up after around 15 mins on non continuative tests to tune the primary..

it would be nice to have some ideas to improve and resolve this...

i will post some pics of the coil in total.. (the rotary spark gap now uses copper whire behing the electrodes in an arc way so that the little aluminum scotch i used for topload dosent melt like crazy [i tryed and failed haha] so now dosent melt and its really more costant in the fireings and precision of the rotation!)

Hopeing to get help from you all as soon as possible :3

Have a nice one!

It sounds like your coils primary circuit is not tuned correctly, so you have less energy transfer and the current keeps circling in the primary circuit (heating it up) and you might have flash-overs due to bad tuning / grounding / too high coupling.

Could you put your numbers and specifications in JavaTC and post the results?

Hi Mads!

Sure, there you go.

The resonant frequencies are WAY off from each other, but that is properly because you input 0.94uF and not 0.094uF for the primary capacitor.

Under the power calculations, the SRSG LTR capacitance is given to 0.1383uF, you might have hit some resonance with your 0.094uF and the inductance of the NST secondary, which heats it up and if you are unlucky, destroys it? I am not experienced enough with SGTC and RTG to say much more about this...
