Racing arcs on secondary
« on: July 04, 2022, 07:03:50 PM »
I'm new to the forum. I have a medium size sgtc with a 4in secondary. I want to put a 6in secondary coil but when I do I get arcs racing up the secondary coil. It works good with the 4 in. I've tapped the primary every possible place. Added extra turns on primary but I can't get rid of the arcs. For a power supply I have 4 12000v 30ma net's
in parallel.  The cap is mma made with good caps. Anyone have any idea what I can do?

The new bigger secondary is now closer to the primary coil, this way you increased coupling and there is a limit to what coupling you can have before you'll see overvoltage on the secondary.
Lower your primary coil / raise your secondary a bit to reduce coupling.
Bigger topload could also work.

Thanks. I should have mentioned, I opened up the primary coil in the center and I also left several inches unwound on the secondary to get it above my primary. The primary is completely flat. But I think you're right about it being overcoupled. I'll try moving it slightly higher and maybe remove a winding or 2 from the center of the primary.  My top load is 30 in × 4.5in toroidal shape. Thanks for the advice.

Did you simulate your original coil and changed coil in JavaTC? http://www.classictesla.com/java/javatc/javatc.html

This calculates the coupling and also gives you a recommended coupling. For a SGTC that is 0.136 that is usually suggested by JavaTC.

A few other causes of racing sparks could be badly tuned primary circuit, so that its running too much off the secondary circuit resonance or bad/insufficient grounding of the secondary.

I actually don't own a computer so no I haven't simulated the coil. I'm building by trial and error mostly. As far as tuning of the primary I have moved my tap all over the primary. I have a piece of 1.5ft of copper clad steel bar .5in diameter driven into the ground to serve as my ground. Connected with the same 26awg magnet wire that the secondary is wound with. Should I use a wire with less resistance to connect my ground ? The secondary is wound on 6in cardboard tube. I sprayed it with a light coat of polyurethane before winding and after we r winding I coated the whole secondary with a generous coat of 2 part epoxy. Could my construction method have any cause on the unwanted arcs ?

I would use a much bigger ground wire. At these frequencies, almost all the current is flowing on the outer surface of the wire so 26 AWG wire is not going to provide a very good ground. I use 0.75 inch tin-plated copper braid for my ground connection.

Thanks. I'll try a bigger ground. I have some 2awg welding cable. Maybe that will help my problem.

At these frequencies most of the copper in your welding cable will be wasted due to the skin effect. If you don't mind the waste go ahead. Flat copper braid or copper strip would work just as well with much less waste.

Since I have the cable I don't mind the waste. I will probably invest in some braided copper strapping. Is there a minimum with I should keep in mind. I now added a 60ma 12000v nst to the other four 12000v 30ma net's.

I use one inch wide braided copper cable although there isn't anything crucial about this size.
