Thermometers

We had to check for a fever, and found these two thermometers in medicine cabinet.
I consider one to be more accurate. Hint: it's one that will be fully functional and accurate after another 50 years without maintenance.


I would dismiss non-contact thermometers unless there's no alternative. Has anyone ever seen one used by a licensed clinician, in an individual check on someone who feels sick?

Assuming it was made accurately to start with, and doesn't end up with a bubble in the tube

By non-contact, you mean the type that measures skin temperature fex on the face? They are of course notoriusly unreliable due to measurment affected by so many things in the surroundings.

With three kids, I am familiar with both types, but I had my cheap electronic checked against my class A PT-100 probe and found it accurate to within 0,5 K in the normal body temperature range. Important that they are not drifting, so one have a good idea about baseline body temperature of the individual.

It is thus more easily used for my better part , who is an accountant and not familiar with fine meterology

I did also check my barbecue thermometer up to 100 degrees Celcius, to verify it against my PT-100. I really like my meat red...(the PT-100 probe wont survive the barbecue)

I did have a -10 to +280 Celcius glassthermomenter but it was unfortunately broken. I kick myself every day. These are now unobtanium in EU, as mercury thermometers are totally banned from sales. A curiosity, at the universty where I studied they did build a new chemistry/science faculty and when the old sinks where removed each water trap was filled with mercury. I think they collected several kilos in the end.
