Salvaged a HUge toroidal Iron core

So, I found this AVS(automatic voltage stabilizer) in my house'd storage whilst cleaning

Taking it apart to my delight I found a huge toroidal core.


Any ideas on what I can do with it??

Could wind a variac. It is a big job.

Well, it's already wound in auto-transformer like fashion.

So, should I just remove insulation off of the inner winding then make a brush to contact these windings

might that work??

Hmmm I dont't know, I would need to see a picture. Usually the insulation is removed from the "top".

No, it's not really a continuously variavle autotransformer

The thing is that some of the winding I guess are burnt

So, Rewinding HERE I COME!!

now, most of the autotransformers I've seen have a very tall and wide toroid

mine is much more stockier

So, the dimensions are 170mm width and 50mm height
It weighs in at about 5 kgs

It is a nice core. I'm not sure about the toroidal core dimensions, EI plates have a standard, but these I think not. There is a chance a good part of that is the other winding.

The other winding is 480 turns
And is a bilayer winding

What would be a better way to unwind it
Should I just cut the wires out or should unwind it keeping the wore intact?

Enamelled wire is hard to reuse when it has first had "sharp" bends and you might have insulation failure from straightening it out again.

Just the time it would take and the sheer pain of unwinding a toroidal transformer should stop you from even trying it

I would just cut the wire with a angle grinder, carefully so that you do not hit the core.

You could keep the mains/primary winding on it, assuming its for your country's main supply voltage and then have a few turns of very heavy cable or bus bar for a low voltage high current supply, use it to melt a wrench or set other stuff on fire

Well, I did completely unwind one if the windings so there's that

I'll just cut the other one out with a hacksaw
