Practical limitations in size for Marx or CW
« on: November 25, 2021, 05:58:34 PM »
Anyone know at what point adding stages to a Marx or CW simply doesn't add significant performance?

Make a simulation model (LTSpice or other free tool).  Include parasitic capacitance between the two capacitor stacks.

There's not an exact answer to this question. Efficiency gradually decreases as the number of stages increases. One data point for voltage multipliers is this. I have seen a 20-stage VM on Youtube driven by 2 AC flybacks in parallel. It seems to have a streamer length about the same length as my 14-stage VM also powered by the same 2 AC flybacks in parallel. My supply voltage is 15 kv peak AC at 28 khz. I don't know what the 20-stage supply voltage or charging frequency is.

You are better off starting with the highest power supply voltage that is compatible with your design. This will minimize the number of stages for a given output voltage and thus maximize efficiency.

In addition to higher input voltages, larger capacitances will also help with sag. These will, of course, be costly.
For a CW, another option is increasing supply frequency, since sag will reduce with higher frequencies.

You can do a + tower and a - tower, which will both lower the voltage to ground of any individual tower (easier to design) and also greatly help with sag.

Attached is a CW multiplier design calculator spreadsheet (zipped so I can attach it) that I got from... somewhere. Probably 4HV or here.
