Cyclotron radiation detection using SDR
« on: October 30, 2021, 05:30:40 AM »
Hi
I'm experimenting with a magnetron type device using a single pulse and would like to detect the Cyclotron radiation using a software defined radio.

I haven't used a SDR before and was wondering what one would be good for a first time?

Not sure what frequency it will be at as the setup/experiment is not standard.

I've ordered off this company before, https://alexnld.com/product/rtl-sdr-receiver-r820t2-usb-rtl-sdr-dongle-with-0-5ppm-tcxo-sma-mjzsee-a300u-tester/

Hi plasma,

for your first device I would suggest you to get a RTLsdr stick.
One of those for example:

The V2 version (the ones in the green aluminium case) have a pretty nice timebase built in.
They are for sure not the best SDR out there but they are cheap and abundant, since everyone uses them.
This makes them super universal with a lot of sotware for all kind of tasks already available.

EDIT:
And since you experiment with magnetrons, you are pretty likely to fry one, so it is propably a good idea to start with a cheap one.

For a better one you want to know some more of your parameters, since most better SDRs are either specelizing on a specific task or SUPER expensive.

Your project sounds pretty intersting btw, I wouldn't mind to read and see more about it.  :)

I hope this helps,
Michael

Thanks Da Stier

Alexnld https://alexnld.com/product/usb2-0-adapter-rtl-sdr-rtl2832u-r820t2-1ppm-tcxo-tv-tuner-stick-receiver-green/ has it which is good, the write up lists software package, It looks better than others with protocols it says it can detect,I'll probably have to install Linux as Xp won't work. Airspy.com lists some software.
I'll be ordering in the new year when the courier start again, the postage from the website is cheap but slow.
I'm doing tests with out it in another thread, its slightly different from a magnetron(no vacuum) ,but did cut one up to see if I could use it with the wire in the middle.
Cheers

Interesting.
Your magnetron looks like one from a microwave oven.
This means you are going to be roughly in the same frequency range I guess.
At least for the main output.

So an RTL SDR stick might not have enough bandwith to catch it.
The next best option with much more bandwith is propably a HackRF.
The chinese clones go for around 200$.
It goes up to 6GHz and can transmit as well (even though you will propably not need that for now).

For every more advanced software you need, GNU Radio is the way to go.

Michael

Yep its from a microwave, cut it open to see what it looks like.

This was the test bed I wanted to test, the left side sprayed forwards and jumped to the next electrode, the right side went backwards.

I'll have a look at GNU radio software, I was hoping its like oscillator scope shots

Hi plasma,

For this kind of functionality (getting a frequency vs Amplitude plot with calibrated quanteties, triggers, etc.) you are looking at an spectrum analyzer.
It is possible to get similar functionality with a SDR Receiver, however it is a lot of scripting and the simple RTLSDR sticks might not have enough power.
The biggest problem is that the IF bandwith of an RTL SDR stick is only around 2 MHz.
This means that you can only plot 2MHz of spectrum at a time, without retuning, which is pretty slow.
(At least for sweeping a frequency range).
Therefore you need to know your expected frequency pretty much spot on to be able to capture it.

There is a very nice sweep spectrum analyzer software for the Hack RF out there.

https://github.com/pavsa/hackrf-spectrum-analyzer

This comes pretty close to a "oscilloscope type of usage".
By setting infinite persistance, you will be able to capture short pulses as well.
It uses some sweeping capabilities of the HackRF hardware to be pretty close to a real spectrum analyzer.

Greetings,
Michael

The same website had https://alexnld.com/product/hackrf-one-usb-platform-reception-of-signals-rtl-sdr-software-defined-radio-1mhz-to-6ghz-software-demo-board/ at $400 NzD its doable but will take awhile to get it, but I can use it for other things.

Cheers Da Steir for your help much appreciated.
