audio frequency high voltage
« on: March 13, 2021, 08:58:31 PM »
I'm looking for a high voltage coil that will operate at frequency rage of 300 hz - 7 khz.
Ignition coils operate at lower frequencies and flybacks run at higher frequencies.
Does anyone know of a coil I can buy somewhere?
Appreciate any assistance, thanks.

Assuming you want to cover that whole frequency range...
can you narrow down the requirement a bit?
Approximate magnitude of inductance, voltage, current, power, nonlineaity, etc.?
Do you need multiple windings, as for a transformer or flyback circuit?
Have you considered air core or ferrite pot core inductors like those found in loudspeaker crossover networks?

I don't know much about electronics. I just need a high voltage supply for a few experiments I want to do.
Looking for over 20kv that will throw a hot spark at that frequency range.
I have tried an ignition coil but they quit running at just over 1khz
I have read that flyback transformers run at 15khz and higher.

I had a TV flyback transformer running at 7khz once (50% duty cycle max), arcs ignited at 7cm with just 12v input so be careful of the insulation breaking down. Also you should really use a driver with peak current limiting for flybacks at that low frequency as it can saturate the core when drawing arcs (let me know if you want me to post one here). Not sure how much lower they will go however, probably not 300hz, might have to adjust the core gap size.

Any reason why the frequency needs to be in the audible range? Audio modulation perhaps? With tuning and enough input voltage the arcs can be pretty big even at higher frequencies, more so with a resonant capacitor.

I'm  doing some experiments, that's all. Thanks

Still trying to figure out a HV power supply.

Try this, you can use UC3845 if you want to run the chip from 12v. The 35v supply can be reduced for lower power levels and the capacitor near the primary coil can also be reduced for more voltage if your FET can handle it (I used 100nF with a 600v fet).

Make the layout tight and that stuff around the primary coil should be essentially point to point to minimine stray inductance and capacitance or else its not as effective. The primary current sensing makes it very robust for drawing arcs.

Its the driver I used to get those arcs igniting over a 7cm gap with 12v at 7khz. Sometimes you can find these chips in wallwarts, there are a couple different versions of the chip some run with with duty cycles over 50% whilst some keep it below that and others don't start up until the supply voltage is high enough. When I tried the >50% duty cycle chips it went unstable around 70% duty cycle.
