Outlook is not good.

All shops, except food, have now been asked to close down.
No gatherings pubic or private with more than 10 persons.
Up to 18 in intensive care now :(

Todays electronic subject, induction heater capacitors. A walk-through of different types of power capacitors that can be used in induction heater applications, ceramic, MICA, various types of film capacitors and extremely large internally water cooled power capacitors are demonstrated.

I bet the amount of high power caps you've got would cost 1000's if purchased new!

71 UK deaths and almost 2000 confirmed cases so far, advice is for people to stay at home but nothing is law yet. Out and about people are still going about their business as normal around here.

Edit: The next morning and I've woken up with a runny nose, oh dear.  :-\

Seems we are over 1000 cases now, sub 100 in hospital and some 30 intensive care. Not looking bad, but government is still expecting it to speed up.

Day 8 in isolation.

I show the most interesting #highvoltage gear and #equipment that I need to #repair. From manufacturers like Glassman, Haefely and others.

I can't help thinking climate change will be a hell of a lot worse then this current situation, this is just a taster of what's to come.

Been back in NZ in self-isolation for a day now - I'd brought my trip forward a couple of weeks so that even if the government made everyone self-isolate then I could still make my sister's wedding (now to be a small affair), and sure enough by the time we left effectively all arrivals have to go into isolation for 2 weeks. People in self-isolation are still allowed to go out using private transport or a bicycle, just not get into contact with other people (i.e. no shopping etc).

Numbers in NZ are going up pretty quick, though yesterday's were all travel related and crossing fingers that today's are the same. No sign of community transmission yet but there's always that worry that they're not doing enough testing to pick it up if there was. Really hoping that we don't come out of isolation straight into a lockdown! Low population density here would probably help significantly though if it did get fully loose, though unfortunately it's also headed into winter now so they're also worried about the normal seasonal pressures on the health system from the flu etc.

Hopefully will have a chance to do some electronics while here - I brought some kit with me as I needed to do some remote work anyway. This includes a thermal camera, so I'll try and get some footage if I manage to get my big coil up and running :)

113 cases here in Croatia, one died. Everything except food stores is closed. Today all academic personnel is sent home and I too started working from home
Not looking good so far, over 20% of Croatia BDP comes from tourism, so the country is essentially doomed

Maybe I'll finally finish my TO-247 DRSSTC if I don't run out of parts

Very nice little coil, but please give it a gift in the form of a longer break out point :)

I completely forgot to post my day 9 video yesterday, so here goes a walk-through of my high voltage transformers

You have a very nice collection of high voltage transformers  :)
Do you have other transformers, like ferrite core ones ?

Here in France, all non vital shops are closed, people must stay at home, or else they have €135 fine. The last count is more than 12'000 cases, with 450 deaths  :(

I show a large 70kV x-ray ferrite core transformer as the last thing in the video. Other than that its limited to flyback transformers of various sizes.

Day 10 in isolation.

13 dead are confirmed cases of having covid-19, but its not determined as the cause of death. 35 in intensive care in respirators.

I go through my collection of current #transformers. Regular ratio transformers, hall effect sensors, shunts, Pearson and Ion Physics current monitors and how to make a #DIY high frequency current transformer.

On the popular map page by Johns Hopkins is a cases-by-time chart that can be switched to semilogarithmic.
The growth of n_infections outside of China is holding steady at 2x every four days, 10x every two weeks.
https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html

Let's hope to see a downward inflection as lockdowns kick in and the epidemic runs its course.

There are jurisdictions where belated increases in testing could appear as increasing infection rates. Of course that would be manipulated for political reasons. Some of my friends from mainland China say that political manipulation of numbers coming from there is a given. The PRC would not be alone in that regard.

New Zealand is heading into lockdown for the the next month, trying to stay ahead of the curve.

Just ordered the PCBs and parts for a vacuum tube phono preamp. Thats what the cute little tubes in my hand are for. In the background is the thing that will keep me earning money - a micro oxygenation controller for winemaking. I designed and built the hardware and wrote the firmware.

The lockdown of Denmark has been extended to last until April 13th! Another 20 days to go.

Day 12 video: I give an overview of a 65kW X-ray generator system for a 70 kV X-ray transformer. The fullbridge of 400A 1200V IGBT bricks makes for a powerful inverter to drive the ferrite cored high voltage transformer.

So when will you be ready to make some xrays?

So when will you be ready to make some xrays?

I do not have a controlled enough environment to do that safely, where it would be accepted by the government, so I do not produce any x-rays.

I do not have the head for this system either, so I would have to source one of those long, tubular x-ray heads in order to have something that can take this amount of power that this can supply. It will properly end up as a jacobs ladder before a x-ray machine :)

or feeding some ind of extreme voltage multiplier, yet to be built.

Day 13, not much news since yesterday. Expectation is properly that we see another extension in a couple of weeks. Until April 28th and schools might stay closed for the rest of the school year, up until the summer vacation.

A talk about diodes of various sizes, from different ages, development in technology and power levels. The only things missing would be selenium diodes as I forgot where I put them and I do unfortunately not own a mercury arc rectifier.

A couple I know from work are in New Zealand for the biennial Tour Aotearoa bicycle trek, 3000 km of trail riding. https://touraotearoa2020.maprogress.com/
Started March 4 in a wave of about 65 riders. Got as far as Wanganui when the coronavirus thing got bad.

Just yesterday I heard that they faced a choice: bail out and go home to USA right away, or stay in NZ indefinitely.  They're hoping to be home this weekend.

Ah that's a bugger, there is a lot of spectacular scenery they missed after W(h)anganui, especially in the south island. Hope they made it home OK, though it does seem like a bit of "out of the frying pan, into the fire" going back to the states right now given the numbers there (assuming that's where they are going to?).

Danish goverment recommend returning home, to ensure you have the best possible healthcare available as a citizen (for free in Denmark), it can get real expensive or be on subpar hospital / get behind in the queue if you are stuck in another country and you get sick. Language barriers, insurance claims, legal stuff etc, it is just easier to be sick at home :)
