Proper capacitance size
« on: October 31, 2024, 06:46:32 PM »
Hello new member here, recently I've gotten into coiling and my next venter is going to be a 8" 2250kva coil, generally I'm going for size thinking a 5:1 ratio for hight, rotarySG. Here's where I'm a bit confused with the planning the capacitance values recommened on deepfriedneon vastly different from whats recommened on teslamap so im curious if a 68nf tank would be adequate?

My big coil is 6KVA, 8 inches and I'm using 70nF. You can't mean 225kva, maybe 2.25Kva? I'm using PTs not NSTs they are different. Hope this helps.

The tank cap size depends on the voltage and current your power supply puts out.
Also if you use a synchronous rotary gap, a larger that resonant value is ideal.

Deep fried neon gives you the resonant value to match the transformer. However if you use an asynchronous rotary gap, don't use this resonant value because the resonant voltage rise could kill the transformer. I think a smaller than resonant value is ideal for that.

I have a 8.5" SGTC with a synchronous RSG running at 3600 RPM at 240 PPS. My power supply is a pole transformer. I am currently pulling about 6 kVA. My capacitance is 45 nF. The maximum capacitance that you can effectively use is determined by the maximum current that your transformer can deliver. I have always used JAVATC to design the coil. JAVATC has an output which shows the percent charge on the capacitor per bang. To get the most out of your capacitor you want that value to be close to 100%. I think mine is currently about 90%.
