Problem with VTTC Staccato interrupter PLZ HELP
« on: August 13, 2022, 09:32:08 PM »
Hi! I have been working on a Vacuum tube tesla coil with my dad(my dad is an electrical engineer and i am 12yo and understand electrical engineering and high voltage safety, i still only work with high voltage when he's around so don't bombard me with safety comments) and it actually worked first try on CW mode. But as soon as i tried it out with a Staccato Interrupter PCB that i designed with EasyEDA, it did not produce interrupted sparks, it acted exactly as if it was running without the interrupter. here is some info on the coil and interrupter.
The interrupter produced perfect QCW-like sawtooth wave pulses when the output was hooked up to my oscilloscope.
I was using steve ward's 833a coil design, just with a more powerful tube( i used a single Eimac 3CX5000A7 triode)
the coil.
i was interrupting the coil with a 400v 6a triac - connected between the tube cathode and ground with the interrupter output connected to the gate/base)
The issue is that according to my multimeter the resistance between the tube cathode and ground is 9 megohms - the normal internal resistance of the triac (i tested the triac before i put it in the circuit). the coil was acting as if the triac was bypassed but it wasn't.

Anyway, does anyone have ideas on what we could try to fix it? if you do, let me know.

Research a bit about how TRIACs or thyristors in general work (or ask your dad).  See if you can figure this out on your own after understanding thyristors.  You could also experiment with one at low voltage using a bench power supply and light bulb or resistor for load to switch.

Update: it turns out the triac was dead because i accidentally damaged it while soldering it in.

Glad to hear that you found the issue!
Is your plate supply half-wave rectified?  If full-wave, the tube impedance must be high enough for TRIAC current to drop low enough for long enough between line half-cycles to turn off.  Using TRIACs on the DC side of full-wave rectifiers can be problematic, especially if the load has any significant inductance.
Been about 50 years since I've built anything using vacuum tubes.  Sufficient impedance does seem reasonable from my ancient recollection.

I'm using a level shifter circuit on the plate supply, similar to the one in this schematic https://www.stevehv.4hv.org/VTTC5/833Aschematic.JPG

Thank you.  Makes perfect sense now.  Standard circuit on MOT output that is used to feed magnetron in microwave oven.  Easily sufficient zero-current time to turn off TRIAC.

Thanks for the help! The replacement trial came in yesterday and i'm about to power the coil up on staccato mode. wish me luck.
