Testing xformer
« on: May 01, 2022, 08:53:30 PM »
I was thinking about how to test this beauty?

I have measured Rprim(~0,9ohms) and Rsec (1250ohm).
Those add upp to 40/60% share loss, total 25W at rated 0,1 Amp output.

But for testing,  sans high voltage loads and probes for my voltmetet what is the best proposal?

I can for sure hook it up to a variac and very slowly increase primary, I have CAT2 1000V rated multimeter. I could disconnect this and appny full voltage to see if something goes bang. But I cant test loading it. So any proposals for loading, 0,1amps at 6,5kV?:)

Or do I have to get a humungous amount of power resistors?

Ignoring core loss and magnetization current, secondary loss is 12.5W and primary loss ~8W.

I'd guess this transformer works well.  You've already verified neither winding is open.  Most likely remaining failure is HV insulation.  If you have a small DC flyback or other similar low-current HV source, I'd apply that between secondary and shield/primary, and slowly raise voltage to ~10kV (bit over peak of 6.5kVrms) or a bit higher.  Measure current in the return side (shield/primary) to verify no arcing or corona.

You can also check for any shorted turns and for basic transformer operation at low voltage, say between 6Vac and 24Vac to keep secondary within range of your 1kV meter.  Measure voltage ratio and primary current.

If you want a final non-full-power verification, apply 220Vac to primary through an incandescent light bulb.  That way if insulation does break down, arc power is limited.  (You could draw a secondary arc with this setup, as the light bulb will limit primary current, presuming bulb is under 650W rated.  However, there is some risk in creating a voltage spike as the secondary arc breaks, which could break down insulation if the secondary is barely sufficient for 6.5kV.)

By far the most important:  Secondary is likely capable of momentary current way past 0.1A, so instantly lethal.  Use extreme caution!  Even more hazardous than typical MOTs due to higher voltage capable of jumping farther.

Thanks for the reply..

Just remembered that I do have a bulb-tester, built from 1-4 parallell connected 60W incandesent bulbs (hard to find these days) of non-halogen-type so of course I will do that.

I will try to measure leakage inductance aswell, with shorted secondary.

6,5 kV will require respect and safety first at all times, as the transformer can supply a lot of current  (0,1A is the thermal limit) with 1,25 kohm secondary and a very low primary resistance, even if I have a light bulb tester which limits primary current to about 0,3-0,4 amps(60W/230VAC)  it is dangerous and potentially lethal.
