I would also add that the 1kV/mm rule for pointy electrodes work only until a certain voltage (45kV for needle in the chart), as it becomes non-linear after I stumbled across this chart : where 80kV gives 11cm striking distance for needles electrodes

I was introduced to high voltage with the electrostatic sparks when crt tv were turned on I used to have this kind of electronic game ( ) and velleman kits Why don't they make toys like that anymore? I would have loved to have that
I think they no longer make this kind of HV toys, as the modern society is that if the child hurts himself using the toy, there would have a lawsuit and fines against them

when we browse across his channel, we can see his video(s) about free energy... where comments are disabled too so one may conclude that he's biased towards pseudo sciences, ternishing high voltage hobby

I would rather put this choke to earth, and the discharge tower directly to the bottom of the multiplier, or else the choke will arc over due to voltage peak I did that, and it works great Edit : I left the secondary open circuit

Hi ! I would definitely ground the multiplier on one side of the AC input (I would ground the diode side, to avoid DC pulses in flyback secondary, to "try" reducing back emf) I would also ground this multiplier through a small 110- 220V transformer primary used as an inductor choke, to block the AC flyback from leaking, but pass the DC, both to ground indeed, I noticed on my multiplier that most of the AC leaked, leading to bad output. adding this choke greatly increased the output cheers

Hi everyone, I'm concerned about the use of beryllium oxide in the white thermal paste commonly used for MOSFET, voltage regulator and power electronics the question is, does it contains Beryllium oxide ? edit : I always wash my hands after dealing with electronics thanks for the replies, and good Xmas and New year

Hi ! you can use drivers featured on this page to drive these flyback if the flyback has only 2 primary pins, I would suggest using the 555 driver, as it can drive this kind of flyback, even at low power http://uzzors2k.com/index.php?page=flybacktransformerdrivers cheers, ElectroXa

my bad, I completely forgot the resonant characteristics of these half bridge, where leakage inductance is welcome, focalizing on hard switched half bridge inverters sorry if my previous message causes misunderstanding

But I am courious about your last remark, how do you define an incorrectly wound transformer.
Hi I would characterize an incorrectly wound transformer as a transformer having either a high leakage inductance (causing ringing with parasitic capacitances for example), a loose coupling between primary and secondary, core saturation, and / or other defects (like too much interwinding capacitance, etc...)

Hi everyone I recently made this tiny "high" (medium) voltage transformer, which outputs 690V rms at couples of mA, to feed small gas tubes and small multipliers The transformer consumes 13mA when the secondary is open circuit, and 8mA when the secondary is shorted, with 0.1uF ballast capacitor in series with primary and isolated 230V in the primary. When run for several minutes, the primary gets a very little warmer. (the TO-247 mosfet is for size comparison, the core measures 5 cm height, and 3,5cm width) the main question is : Did you ever see an even smaller iron core (50-60Hz) HV transformer, or did I make one of the smallest ?

Hi Couldn't topload heating be caused by the fact the topload is acting like a shorted turn in your design, thus heating a lot ? I found this answer here : Some top load electrodes behave as shorted turns and those should be used only on longer secondary coils, perhaps with length about 3 times their diameter. Hi this cracking sound may be produced by film capacitor being abused by the high resonant voltage in this high current test I would suggest you to measure capacitance before and after a run, to confirm or not if the cracking noise is coming from caps. Indeed, when a capacitor is cracking, it loses capacitance a little bit, as the metal film is vaporized. Have a great time

I would also like to know if air ioniser has AC flyback or not.
Hi like davekni said, air ionisers are using DC voltage, thus a DC flyback. I've an other suggestion to find AC flybacks, it's to look for ozone generators, as they have an AC flyback

Hi there is also a fifth type of core, although it's less common in appliances. Indeed, I found some Metglas core in some appliances, like this core : https://zupimages.net/up/20/12/xhah.jpegThere is an overview of Metglas properties here : https://metglas.com/magnetic-materials/ Does anyone have tried this material for GDT, and is Metglas suitable for GDT construction? Thanks

You have a very nice collection of high voltage transformers Do you have other transformers, like ferrite core ones ? Here in France, all non vital shops are closed, people must stay at home, or else they have €135 fine. The last count is more than 12'000 cases, with 450 deaths

Here in France, all schools, universities are closed, meetings of > 100 people are forbidden, some museums are closed. Teleworking is encouraged, and at this time, there are 79 deaths and 3600 people are contaminated

these tracks are spark gaps, and they are used to conduct fast transients (like ESD) by arcing, avoiding the inductor, as the inductor will oppose an impedance to fast transients voltages

Hello I bought a similar flyback, it won't work for plasma ball as it outputs DC voltage, and plasma balls requires (high frequency) AC to work. Edit : I found on eBay an AC flyback : https://www.ebay.fr/itm/283635925903

Hi capacitor failed maybe from resonance ringing, as this phenomenon boosts voltage and current in the circuit, leading to failure. So I recommend you to use capacitors in series to have a large voltage headroom, to avoid flashover, as for example using 2* 50kV capacitors in series to have a rating of 100kV. I also recommend using pulse film caps as they can withstand high pulse current.
