Beginners / Need help identifying a component!
« on: March 31, 2019, 11:00:56 AM »
Hey all,

It's been a while since I was last here in this forum due to studies.

I'm currently part of a team participating Shell Eco-marathon Asia and one of our motor controllers have a blown chip! It is part of the USB input. The controller is working, however the USB port to program the controller isn't. It is an ESCON 70/10 servo controller by maxon motors. I will attach the datasheet below.

We have two controllers that are the same to refer.

Here's the blown one:

And here's the other one that is fine

It appears that the wording is "L2t". However, I could not find anything on it.

Here's its datasheet
* 422969-ESCON-70-10-Hardware-Reference-En.pdf

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks again!

You might want to watch this youtube video as to why using a Variac is better than a Triac. I had the same question before then too!

I just 3d modelled my own adapter. However I used metal bolts but as @Grayf and mads in my thread mentions that you can use nylon bolts and nuts.

Have a look at my build here: https://highvoltageforum.net/index.php?topic=77.0

Maybe spam epoxy?

Now I have signed in, which can only be done on a non translated page... and it says this when I try to open a thread "Sorry, your user group (waiting for verified members) can not do this"

I have to wait to be activated by a moderator or something.

Before creating an account I am able to open a thread :/

I have also created an account via wechat which took just 10 seconds
A very interesting forum with many builds and guides available.

Here are some of my favorites.
A short comic series regarding electrical safety (can't be translated sorry) : http://www.hvdiy.com/thread-35903-1-1.html

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / Re: Micro drsstc
« on: February 27, 2018, 05:17:19 AM »
Looks like I have returned at the right time! Looking forward for more!

Sadly I still I can't work on my coil till June :-\ College is indeed stressful.

You can usually find those exact modulators and drivers in taobao for a much cheaper price. Since I'm not too entirely well verse with electronics and Tesla Coil circuits although after building one I refrained from buying them as of now. Those links in the PCB usually leads you to a Chinese HV forum which consists of many interesting builds. Here's one: http://www.hvdiy.com/forum.php

Hey,
Sadly no   :-\ I'm having exams now till November and then I will finally be out of high school and I can continue to work on it and some other projects I have been planning to work on. As of now I will just float around here :P

Static Electricity / Re: My first Van De Graaff Generator
« on: September 25, 2017, 04:44:53 PM »
For my second build will be to have a better belt as it is the main components I was constantly struggling on.
I'm not entirely sure where I can get a nice rubber belt. The first picture is made of a car inner tyre tube and the final is made out of a warning tape which worked rather decently.
Another factor will be to have a nicer dome as this one has many sharp edges and the brush is connected to it. If it is not positioned properly it would not work well or at all.
And another would be to use a direct motor connection to the roller as this uses a belt and it vibrates rather vigorously.
Perhaps also to cut down the size by 2 times and maybe get it powered by a battery so it is more portable.

Really hope that you are able to build a VDG soon!

Static Electricity / My first Van De Graaff Generator
« on: September 24, 2017, 06:13:26 PM »
Since this section empty. I decided to contribute one of my work. This Van De Graaff generator is built last year as a school project.
I'm planning to build another generator out of printed parts with hopefully longer sparks which I will document in another Topic.

I have well documented my entire process of building this generator in my Instructables here: https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Van-De-Graaff-Generator/

Here are some pictures:

Sparks!

Feel free to ask me anything :)

Woah, that's pretty nice. I'm looking forward for more updates! Going to work on my coil after my major exams :D Busy studying lately :'( .

For smaller coils, any thoughts on the type of circuitry you are going to use? Was thinking to make some miniature tabletop sized tesla coils. PLL circuit seems interesting :P especially the one from E-Schmok

Nice. It works now.

I was wondering where you got the toroid from, seems pretty neat.

Sweet! I see that you have a CNC router. What sort of CNC is it? planning to get a small one to play around. Or maybe a laser cutter

Must be some file placement issue or perhaps the link is not accessible to the public with google photos settings?.

Perhaps putting it at google drive or dropbox might be better :)

That's really amazing! Seems like your toroid is made of alu tape? Always had struggles getting the tape to stick. But damn it was nice. Looking forward for your next build ! ;D

Nice PCB design! I was just wondering how to get the audio modulator to run off a optical fibre cable. Are there any relevant links or help that you can give?

Yeah. I have observed it for a bit and it doesn't seem to do harm as mentioned. The opportunity cost here is real  :P

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Re: Attempting the Kaizer sstc II

I'm actually not entirely sure. All I did is swap my current DC blocking cap to a MKP x2 type capacitor that I bought for extra.. it's rated only 300v tho and it started to work.

The cap I was using back then: goo.gl/wL9snH
Current caps I'm using: goo.gl/3NLiJi

Since the cap is rated at only 300v now. At what limit should my variac go?

Regarding the antenna I think the right term I meant was the visible corona. Should I be concerned over this? I can slightly move it away for sure.

Now i'm planning to just get my audio modulator to work. I see that user E-Schmok has a video on using a Toslink mini jack here: goo.gl/xwiL9w which I'm not entirely sure how to get it to work. If not I will just use a 3.5mm jack or so. Any safety precautions I should be aware of? I have a 6N 137 opto isolator but i'm not entirely sure if it's applicable or how to wire it.

Great news!

My GDT produces a nice square wave now and now it is running at a half Bridge configuration.

Here's a picture During testing.

It's running pretty well.. except that I've run into this issue where there will be sparks at the tip of my antenna at times. Anything that should be done?

Nice. Element14 has a one day free delivery shipping service in my country. Order by 5pm and you get it next day by 1pm pretty good service they have here somehow. But IRFP460s are super overpriced so I get them from my local component stores.
