Magnifier Build
« on: September 04, 2020, 08:58:44 PM »
Hello All,

I have built many coils in the past from small SGTC to mid sized through to DRSSTC.

Clearing out my garage the other day and cobbled together some components and the results have me excited to build again.

.

My plan is for build a midsize magnifier with 12” driver coil and using my 14kv 350ma transformer.

First step finished today with a stainless steel toroid completed. This is 6” x 24”.

Will that not cause magnetic issues?

Beautiful coil and toroid, Colin.

Most stainless steel formulations are practically nonmagnetic, just like aluminum and copper.
Buyers at scrapyards sometimes test with a small permanent magnet before paying the stainless-steel price.

Some stainless steels are plenty magnetic.

The nonmagnetic ones (I think they are "austenitic") can get slightly magnetic when cold worked, welded, etc.
That can be a problem in applications like structural parts in magnetometer instruments.
I think unwanted permeability can be reduced by annealing or some other heat treatment.

Here's one of many references:

Thank you gents,

This is 304 grade stainless we use for food industry (that’s a lot of my work).

As mentioned above the 304 grade which is austenitic. I have used pretty much everything over the years for toploads though and always been fine.

The very small topload in the video is also stainless steel.

Either way will be interesting to compare with Aluminium.

This will be shielding ring for magnifier extra coil and a larger tube type toroid will be made.
