Maximum frequency capability of microwave oven diodes
« on: January 15, 2021, 09:27:43 PM »
In order to measure the peak voltage of an AC flyback transformer, I've built a full wave bridge rectifier rated for 30 KV peak. The hold-up capacitor is 2 nF rated for 30 KV. I will measure the DC output voltage with a HV DC probe. The resistance of the probe will be the only load.

I used HVM12 diodes in the diode strings (3 per string). I believe that they are intended to be used in microwave ovens. There is no maximum frequency specification in the data sheet. My intention is to measure a flyback output frequency of up to 50 KHz.

Does anyone know what the maximum frequency capability of these diodes is?

Hi,

looking at this datasheet:
https://www.rectron.com/data_sheets/hvm5-hvm16.pdf
all the diagrams are made at 60Hz (which of course makes sense in the normal application), however it propably won't work to great at 50kHz, I would imagine.
That's atleast my experience, since manufactures like to give fancy figures, if their part is able to do it.  ;)
There is also a "Typical Current Squarad Time" given with 10.37 A squared /Sec, however I must admit, I have never seen this specification anywhere else.

Greetings,
Michael
