Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / My first simple HFSSTC
« on: July 03, 2023, 09:42:59 PM »
Made my first Tesla Coil :)
I chose self-oscillating HFSSTC, easy looking at first sight, but little bit tricky to fine tune.
At first launch i got very little unstable flame, after tuning primary coil i got more or less good configuration that produce about 4 cm "brush flame", these results motivated me for future experiments.

Resonator has ~155 turns/0.7mm wire, L = 6 turns/1.13mm wire, C = 100pF, Lf = 9.5uH, mosfet - IRFP460.
Power supply is 230/110V transformer, after bridge rectifier no filtering capacitors present, only 22uF added to HFSSTC input, therefore, i think, flame become bushy and produce loud 100Hz sound.
Used "soft start", at beginning transformer is connected in series with 200W ballast(PTC heater), then pressing a button contactor shorts the ballast and connects transformer directly to AC mains.
I don’t measured DC voltage, AC voltage before bridge rectifier is 110V, power consumption is 330W.

Beginners / HFSSTC potential damage to sensitive electronics .
« on: June 21, 2023, 07:29:18 AM »
It is safe to run 10MHz ~300W HFSSTC("plasma candle"), if distance to PC, router, camera and RPI3 is about 1.5-2m ?
This will be my first tesla coil, with no grounding(not available), and I don't want damage any devices nearby.

Beginners / Mosfet internal diode bypass
« on: May 29, 2023, 12:49:32 PM »
If mosfet internal built-in diode is fast enough, there is real need to use external one, theoretically ?
For example, IXFH80N65X2, half bridge/bridge inverter, 35kHz, 230Vac before rectifier, Pmax=2kW, load - arc on ferrite transformer secondary output.

But in real situation i will add a APT30D60BG diode.

Sell / Buy / Trade / Original used transistors on aliexpress
« on: January 05, 2023, 08:04:34 PM »
I found some trusted sellers for used but genuine transistors, maybe this will be useful for someone.
Cheap parts, especially for testing/experiments.
I tested IRFP460 and it worked perfectly.
Here I get IRFP460:

Transformer (Ferrite Core) / ZVS Driver experiments
« on: December 31, 2022, 02:09:00 PM »
Just another ZVS driver, separate gate bias power supply to avoid startup issues.
Mosfets - 2*(2xIRFP250N), resonant capacitor 600nF.
Main power supply - 1.2kVA 50V DC(60V at low load), two iron transformers connected in series.
For primary coil I use copper foil(68mm wide, 0.1mm thick, 4 pieces soldered together), 2+2 turns.
After 30s of arc, primary is being very hot, looks like need use 3x parallel foils(like a foil litz).
In comparison ZVS/push-pull, with same primary, push-pull primary heating is about 10% of ZVS heating, ZVS produce large reactive currents in LC countur - this is most negative thing for me.

Mosfet connections

Short test video, power readings not synchronized.

General Chat / Neutral silicone as insulator ?
« on: March 24, 2022, 07:52:55 PM »
Someone used silicone in diy HV transformer as between winding layer insulator ?
I did some tests on 20kV cable with 5 mm silicone insulation, on high frequency HV - corona discharge between insulation layer and "hot" wire. HV test source was old AC flyback + zvs driver.
Like this one - https://penosil.com/product/penosil-premium-neutral-silicone/

Transformer (Ferrite Core) / Half Bridge IR2153 + IRFP460
« on: December 26, 2021, 07:33:33 PM »
Long time ago I assembled this half bridge, only low power test were made trough 100W lamp.
Both FETs heated too much, so decided freeze this project until I get oscilloscope, but forgot about it for 10 years 😊
Found that frequency is too high ~145kHz, IR2153 output is weak for this, replaced Rt timing resistor to correct value.
Test run through 200W lamp – FETs almost cold, all ok.
First direct AC run tripped home 20A circuit breaker, short circuit occurred on pcb, on AC in traces, cleaned pcb and no more fireworks.

Modifications -
Shorter trace from DC bus to FETs.
Changed burned out NTC to SCK-056 5R 6 А.
Used AlN insulator between FETs and heatsink.
Bootstrap capacitor 470uF film > 10uF tantalum.
Snubber film capacitor 2.2uF.

Connected my diy 10T/1000T transformer trough coupling transformer 15T/11T.
Running at 34kHz, max 350W(power factor 0.6) drawn from AC line, FETs heating very slow, with fan - cold.
Calculated primary turns is 12, now using 15.

Schematic, removed relay and indicator leds,  IR2153 power supply switched on manually.

Initial build -

After changes -

One turn over primary.

Low side FET D-S

High side FET D-S

Done experiment with aspirator vacuum pump, seems be enough to remove most of unwanted air.
As expected, plastic box is not enough to resist negative pressure, so need make vacuum chamber, also I’m thinking that heating oil to 60-70*C help to remove more air.
Transformer core - UF86A, secondary 1009T/0.3mm wire, 11 layers.
Used old transformer oil, tested breakdown voltage = 20kV/mm.

No need waste lot of water, using 12V pump to supply aspirator.

9
Beginners / Using PVC insulated wire instead of enamel
« on: December 10, 2021, 02:54:33 PM »
How about using PVC insulated wire in diy ferrite core transformer ? (Cu 0.5mm^2, with insulation d = 2.1mm)
Using zero insulation between layers,  when done put in transformer oil + vacuum (aspirator vacuum pump) to remove air.

Transformer (Ferrite Core) / SG3525 push pull snubber calculation
« on: November 13, 2021, 07:03:10 PM »
First hi all, and sorry for my english  :)

I built test SG3525 push pull inverter from chinese SG3525 LM358 Inverter Driver Board module and pair of IRFP260N, drain-source is protected by transil 1.5KE200CA, now waiting parcel with R-C snubber parts.
HV transformer based on UF86A ferrite core, homemade primary & secondary - 5T+5T/700T.
Driver has separate 15V power supply.
Main power supply is 600W transformer, under load(450W) after rectifying -35V.
Transistor heating is moderate, after 1min case temperatue is 45*C.(one large heatsink for rectifier and transistors)
In future i add EMI filter to prevent high frequency going in home mains line.

Connected oscilloscope and get ugly waveforms  :-\
After looking on drain-source waveform i think that 1.5KE200CA is not working- voltage spike more than 200V, or it is normal for a short period ?

Drain-Source

Gate, driver only working

Gate, 450W power consumption, load - hv arc

Main DC bus, on load

220/32V transformer, secondary, on load

For RC snubber calculation i used method from google -" For a RC snubber, you want the C to be about three times the parasitic Cs and R to be equal to sqrt(Ls/Cs)", where Cs - transistor output capacitance, Ls - internal source inductance, this is correct ?
Any things to remove spikes ?
